Chapter Twenty-Three

Tobias leaned in close to me and I turned my head towards him; his presence was so profound nothing else mattered. I closed my eyes, waiting with bated breath for the inevitable touch of his lips against mine. My whole body felt like it had been struck by lightning and the forest of my insides was on fire as a result. And he hadn’t even touched me with his lips. Yet.

“Can I kiss you?” he asked gently.

“God, yes.”

He pressed his lips against mine.

If I was overwhelmed before, my first kiss from a boy was something out of this world. I couldn’t even begin to describe it. I had nothing to compare it to.

He put his arm around me, pulling me further into his world. After a moment of getting our noses out of each other’s way and adjusting to what felt right, his lips parted. I soon found his tongue, soft, warm, and sensual, begging for passage into my mouth. I accepted his offer. Oh God, how I accepted.

I groaned with delight.

My tongue tingled from his intimate touch.

My heart thumped.

I was his. My mind became an explosion of passion for him. He was my universe as he kept on kissing me. Wow. My body was soon as numb as my lips—except for my hardness, which now ached unbearably within the prison of my underwear and jeans.

When our kiss was complete, he whispered. “Did you like that?”

Before I could answer, Tobias’ bedroom door was slammed open and clattered against the wall. Mandisa stood at the threshold, arms folded and with a look that could scare away a pack of lions from a fresh kill. “Bet you thought the music could hide what you were doing, didn’t you?”

“Mandisa!” Tobias, however, didn’t let go of me. I liked that he didn’t. “Ever heard of privacy?”

“Just don’t come crying to me,” she said, with a disgusted snort, “like you did when Tom dumped you after you gave him what he wanted.”

“Arty’s not like Tom, I told you that already.” Tobias’s words were infused with anger. I could feel his hand tightening around my waist. I kept quiet because I had a feeling Mandisa wasn’t finished.

I was right.

“Sometimes, Tobias, you’re dumber than even I could imagine. Just look at him. Sure, he’s all puppy-dog eyes for you now, but once you go down on him like you did with Tom, you’ll never see him again. If you can’t see that, then I can’t help you. You just wait and see. You know I’m right.”

She stormed off, leaving me gobsmacked in her wake.

Tobias’ mouth was agape. “I’m…sorry about her, Arty. Really, I am.”

I was no longer in the mood for hugging and kissing. I could see what was going on here. “Um…er…I think I’d…um, better get going, Tobias.”

“Don’t go. Stay, Arty. Ignore her, she’s just being overprotective.”

“I can’t. I don’t…I don’t think your family…they don’t like me. I’m not one of you and I won’t—” I cut myself off. I didn’t want to say out loud what I had on my mind.
