CHAPTER 6

BARGAINS

MARIUS

My hands clenched tighter at my sides as the sounds of debauchery and revelry rose from the manor, but the only sound in my head was the echo of Lillian's whispering gasp as she reached climax. I didn't notice the bite of my own claws against my palm, too busy with the memory of dull nails digging into my back.

She'd nearly said it, I thought, trying to walk straight down the stairs to the open drive, in spite of the brutal ache of my cock.

I'd made a mess of my cold, pristine lady, her flimsy dress bunched up to her waist and pushed halfway down her arms. Her silken hair fell like ribbons from its style, damp with sweat at her brow. All from venomous licks and kisses. She'd been too weak to walk, so I'd carried her to her bed, her arms tightening around my neck as I started to pull away, lips parted to speak.

Stay. Bed me. Fuck me. Not that she would use the crude word so soon. Not without coaching.

And she hadn't. No word had been uttered, and her arms slipped loose as I'd kissed her once more.

Perhaps it was too much to hope for from a creature like Lillian, that she might finally beg, demand, surrender to the claim.

"Idiot," I muttered, rolling my head on my shoulders, listening to the quiet approach of my carriage curving around the drive of the manor.

Was it more humiliating that I'd failed so far, or that I was still determined to let this human, this woman, have her choice? Perhaps I was leaving her too satisfied.

My carriage neared, and I stiffened, a whiff of rot and soiled earth buried under an atrocious amount of ambergris and musk. Grave wraith. Thoughts of Lillian evaporated from my mind, my hand fisting around my cane, ready to pummel the little beast, when the carriage stopped and a reedy voice called from the window.

"He sent me."

I hissed, my shoulders rising but fists loosening slightly. One of Birsha's lackeys. Of course. Had I forgotten why I was dawdling here in the first place?

I ripped open the door, jumping forward into the darkness and ignoring the muffled hiss from the wraith as he retreated to the opposite corner. The carriage was soaked in his horrible scent and I left the window open as we jerked into motion, my face turned to the fresh air and the muted glow of Star Manor.

"He says you'll have forgotten your duty already," the wraith muttered.

"I haven't forgotten the bargain," I snapped. I regretted it, regretted not taking the time to think of a way out of the entanglement. But it was done.

The wraith chittered and shifted in the corner, still held at bay by his own terror. I was tempted to reach up and loosen the blindfold over my eyes just to remind him how terrified he ought to be of surprising a basilisk. But he probably would've excreted on the velvet.

"The witch's wards are keeping us out, and the sphinx's strength backs her," the wraith rushed.
