Chapter 15

Collapsing to the ground at Sasha’s side, Kari pressed her hands against the wound, as if trying to bale the blood back into her body like a shipwreck survivor in a leaking life raft. Her ears filled with a rushing noise, a hurricane inside her head. Her vision narrowed so that Sasha was the only thing in the world. Trees, wind, Boggs and Jason shouting, bullets whizzing by and scraping off bark a few feet away, it all meant nothing. There was only Sasha.

James had crouched by her side without her noticing and was frantically ripping things out of a pack. Flashlights, tarps, bedding, and jerky lay everywhere before he found what he was after. He pulled the cleanest towels he could find from the bottom of the pack and shoved one into Kari’s hands. She looked up at him blankly, all conscious thought wiped from her mind.

He was yelling but she couldn’t hear or understand him. The world had gone completely silent. He took her by the arm and shook her violently, pointing to the towel. “Stop the bleeding!”

His voice rang in her ears, and she was plunged back into the present. Kari gripped the towel tightly, and pressed it hard into the wound. The chaos of what was happening around her suddenly struck. Behind her she could hear Boggs and Jason yelling back and forth, directing each other to take cover, or communicating where they could see someone across the river. Shots cut the air as they exchanged fire.

James picked up Sasha by the shoulder, and stuffed another towel over the exit wound in her back. “Kari,” he yelled, making sure she was focusing, “put your hand on this one too.”

Doing as commanded, she sandwiched Sasha between the towels and her hands, willing her to stop bleeding. Behind her, James was rifling quickly through packs again.

“Where the fuck is it?” he hissed.

“What?,” asked Kari. “What are you looking for?”

He threw a pack aside, reaching for another. “The duct tape.”

Kari thought for a moment. “In mine.” A shot rang out close by.

“What?” James shouted.

“In my pack! It's in my pack!” bellowed Kari, flinging her head back to indicate it’s location.

She turned her focus back to Sasha as James jostled her back and forth, digging desperately for the tape. The blood had seeped through both towels and had begun to drip through Kari’s fingers.

“More towels,” she said, “I need more towels.”

James’ hand appeared in front her, brandishing a towel and a shirt. Good enough, thought Kari. She released her hold on Sasha briefly and took them from James, quickly pressing them back over the crimson stop gaps still resting in place.

“Yes,” announced James triumphantly.

He appeared in front of her again, duct tape in hand. “Lift her up,” he said, pulling a length of tape from the roll.

Kari started to lift, but ducked at the sound of a volley of shots from the river. She pressed her body over Sasha, trying to protect her from further harm.

“Gotcha, motherfucker!” roared Boggs.

Jason yelled over him.
