CHAPTER SIX

FOR the longest moment there was a breathless stillness as she gentled her lips across his.

Daniel, brought almost to his knees by an adolescent eagerness that had swept away the man, the father, thirty-eight years in the single-minded pursuit of success, hadn’t meant to be early. And when he had found a place to park more readily than he’d anticipated he’d certainly intended to sit in the car and wait for fifteen minutes. He’d had plenty to occupy his mind.

For all of two minutes he had tried to focus on some way of persuading Sadie that she should return to school. There had to be some way of convincing her.

His mind, however, had refused to co-operate. It had kept straying to the door a little way down the street. The mystery of the woman behind it.

What would she be tonight? The cool, teasing flirt who had ridden in the back of the Mercedes? The slightly flushed young woman who’d ridden beside him in the Jaguar and then, with one phone call, turned into a totally dedicated career woman racing off to take dictation from some masculine sex symbol. He held her; that was all. His hands at her elbows, steadying her as she stood on tiptoe and sable lashes swept down so that he couldn’t see her eyes, hadn’t got a clue to her thoughts. But a streak of flour dusted her flushed cheek, whitened her mussed hair, lending her a touch of vulnerability that she had, until now, kept well hidden beneath the aristocratic cheekbones, the cool poise of a smile that looked out on the world with the confidence of a woman who knew she could have it all and intended to take it.

The certain, blissful knowledge that, right now, all she wanted was him acted like draught of oxygen over the damped-down heat that had lingered in his veins all afternoon. It flared to her touch, the fire racing through him so that he could scarcely catch his breath. He didn’t want to be this much out of control; he was too old, had seen too much to ever feel like this. But he closed his eyes, anyway. And when, finally, she drew back just an inch or two, sighed a little, looked up at him with those wide grey eyes, he knew he was grinning like the idiot he was.
