CHAPTER SEVEN
WELL, Molly thought.
It was a startâand what a start, if that goodnight kiss was anything to go by. Sam might be taking it one step at a time, but he had a long stride! Humming softly to herself, she went upstairs, checked on Libby and ran herself a bath.
The Hammonds had gone home, gently curious but not pushyânever pushy. Unlike Mick, they were prepared to give things time. Heâd always been impatientâa bit like Sam, really.
How interesting. Sheâd never thought of them like that before, but she supposed in many ways they were alike.
She eased herself into the hot water, her brow pleating into a little furrow as she considered that extraordinary fact. Sam and Mick, as different as chalk and cheese and yet with the same essential qualities of decency and loyalty and human-kindness.
Not to mention impatience and a terrible tendency not to talk about things. Mick had been reluctant to talk to her at first, but then theyâd reached a turning point in their relationship, and heâd opened up to her and given her everything.
Would Sam ever do the sameâand if he did, would he say what she wanted to hear?
She was rather afraid not.
Oh, rats. She must give up this stupid habit of trying to second-guess everything, and just give events time to work themselves out. Refusing to think any more about that kiss or the possible consequences of it, she slid under the water, coming up gasping with her hair streaming in wet ribbons over her shoulders.
Sam would keep. Just for now she had to get bathed, dry her hair and get to bed, because she was on an early tomorrow and time was pressing on.
And in the afternoon, sheâd go and see her GP and get herself put on the Pill.
Just to be on the safe side.
Thursday came before he was ready for it. Sam had spent the entire week alternately regretting the kiss and looking forward to the next one, and suddenly it was Thursday evening and he was taking Molly to the cinema.
Heâd seen Nick and Sally Baker in his clinic that afternoon, and unless he was mistaken Sally was about to go into labourâwhich was all very well, but he really, really didnât want them to ring him tonight!
He put his phone on silent and slid it into his trouser pocket, so heâd feel it vibrate if they called him, and pulled up on Mollyâs drive five minutes early.
Looking keen, he thought in disgust, and decided it was better than looking indifferent and being rude.
Whatever, she was ready and came straight out, looking better than a woman of thirty-three with three kids under her belt had any right to look, and he was suddenly glad they were going to the cinema and it would be dark.
The film heâd wanted to see, however, was full when they arrived, and he kicked himself for not booking in advance. Lord, he really was losing his grip. Molly, however, didnât seem to mind at all.
