CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Mehall - Maelstrom
THE CAMPFIRE CRACKLED, sending pieces of ash up into the night sky. The rain had stopped over an hour ago but Mehall had yet to really warm up. She still felt damp all the way to her bones. Fran had constructed a fire for them as soon as it stopped raining. No one objected to the idea. Mehall knew that whatever was out there stalking them wasnât going to be dissuaded by a campfire, and at the same time, the campfire wasnât going to give away their location to anything that didnât already know exactly where they were. She could still feel it out there watching them. The fire hadnât changed that.
It was a little easier to take in the surroundings with the flicker of the campfire light. Now in the glow, she definitely recognized this cabin. She was sure that she was there before, but she couldnât put her finger on why or for what. Had it been during one of her visions? It was possible, but the worlds she often visited were nothing like hers. It was unlikely that the cabin existed like its current state in any other location. There was another reason why she might recognize it. But that was unlikely. And it hadnât been enough time yet for her to⦠well⦠change.
Maybe she had been recognized from the last time she was here, maybe thatâs part of why Roland and Fran wanted to get her. Had she been here and helped them? Maybe the previous owners? No, she wasnât really the helping type. She didnât remember killing any infected here. The Tomahawk had definitely never called her here. So why did it look so familiar?
The meat on the fire sizzled in the heat. Roland had caught some rabbit after they arrived. The others had enjoyed it. Mehall had waited until they were all asleep. Then she pulled her own dried meat from her pocket. She enjoyed the salty taste. But cooking over the fire gave it a little more seasoning. She pulled the meat out and inspected it. It had been there since the boat. Sheâd forgotten about it, and the people at the Fort had either ignored it or missed it. She used Hardyâs fire poker as a skewer for the meat. Looked good enough. She wasnât really cooking it, just heating it up. The first bite was divine. She hadnât eaten in what felt like years.
âHaving trouble sleeping?â Fran asked from across the fire. Her tone was half whisper.
Mehall shrugged, âNo, I donât really sleep much anymore. Too much to think about.â
âI know the feeling,â Fran said as she got to her feet. She shuffled around the fire. With a blanket wrapped around her, she stepped over Roland and sat down next to Mehall, who moved over as Fran sat down. Fran produced a bottle from under the blanket. It was whiskey.
âWhere did you find that?â Mehall asked as she shook her head to decline the bottle.
Fran took a large swig.
