That rapidly growing national debt doubled between FY 2008 and FY 2017. On September 30, 2008 the accumulated National Debt was slightly over $10 trillion. At the close of business for FY 2017 on September 30, 2017 that debt had doubled to more than $20 trillion and is still expanding to the point that another $1 trillion-plus “hit” is being added just in 2018 and the official total passed $21 trillion only halfway through the 2018 fiscal year. It is now impossible to close the gaps through any achievable strategy of taxation or spending cuts.
