The Witch, Max Ernst, 1941, oil on canvas.

A pioneer of both the Dada and Surrealist movements and a key figure in the twentieth-century avant-garde, Max Ernst (1891–1976), like many innovative artists of his generation, was influenced by Sigmund Freud’s writings on the unconscious and the uncanny. Investigating his psyche as a means of exploring the source of his own creativity, he channelled these primal emotions and personal traumas into his collages and paintings. Seeking safe haven from the Nazis, Ernst painted The Witch the same year he departed Europe for New York. Noted as one of the artist’s favourite subjects, this fantastical figure wrought in eclectic, organic imagery, inspires both fascination and foreboding in equal measure. By portraying their artful analogues as beings with powers of metamorphosis and transformation, the Surrealists alchemized a response to a world devastated by the horrors of the two world wars.
