There are four aspects of radiation to consider:
A) Absorbed Dose
There are two types of radiation; ionizing and non-ionizing. Examples of Ionizing radiation include, alpha particles, beta particles, x-rays and gamma rays, all of which are harmful and measured as an absorbed dose by the unit, joule per kilogram (J/kg). In physics, 1 J/kg is called a gray (Gy). Outside of the Earthâs atmosphere, astronauts need protection from ionizing radiation in LEO and beyond. This becomes even more important for astronauts as they venture beyond LEO and the Earthâs protective magnetic field.
