Chapter Eleven

Luther

The next day

Graystead Home for Lost Souls. I doubt there could be a more depressing name for an orphanage. I rolled my eyes as I stared up at the little plaque above the door. It was a dismal place, all gray stone and dark windows. The front of the building flat with no character, no fancy architecture to make it look inviting. It looked as miserable as the name made it sound. I shuddered at the thought of anyone growing up here, let alone someone as important as my future mate.

That was one reason that brought me back here. I wanted to see Scarlett and talk with her. My dragon needed to lay eyes on our mate to make sure she was safe. If I hated the idea of her growing up her, it made him downright livid.

With a shake of my head, I entered the building and made my way towards the cafeteria, as it was nearing lunchtime. I did not know if anyone would be in there as of yet, but since that was the only room I knew, it seemed a good place to start. As I approached, the pungent aroma of garlic assaulted my sensitive nose.

“Luther, sir! Welcome back!” I looked up and saw Brandon at the opposite end of the long hall I was walking down. Excellent. I had hoped to run into the boy while I was here.

“Brandon, well met, young man.” I walked towards him in welcome, extending my hand to shake his. He took it and gave a firm squeeze for a young man of his age. “How are you feeling today?” I queried. I could see purpling on his skin, bruises he had received in the fight the previous day.

He smiled a bit sheepishly. “Sore, sir, but I am okay.”

“Glad to hear it. How is everything going here? I trust you are doing as we asked and putting the squabbling behind you?”

“Yes, sir. Malcolm and I spoke yesterday afternoon. I, uh, I apologized for overreacting.” Once again he appeared to be sheepish, as though he wasn’t sure he should admit any form of weakness to me.

“Good man. I appreciate you stepping up like that. I am counting on you to continue to be a fine example for the other shifter tribes. We dragons are known for our wisdom and leadership. I expect to hear from Miss Scarlett that you are showing the other kids just what it means to be a shifter and honoring your promise to me.”

“Of course, sir. I won’t let you down.” Brandon’s earnest look made my heart swell. I know my Scarlett had a hand in raising him, all the children at the orphanage really, and it made me proud to see what a fine job she was doing.

I smiled ruefully at myself. I had barely known the woman for three days and here I was, calling her my Scarlett and thinking how proud I was. Being fated really accelerates your way of thinking about your relationship.
