Carter was standing at the bottom of the steps leading into the hair and make-up trailer with a quizzical expression on his face. "What order do you want them in?"

I looked down at him from the doorway and replied, "Stanwyck, Henreid, Long, and McClory first. Then I wanna meet with you and Wesley Lau and see where we go from there." I'd already decided to bring Mr. Lau in as a kind of consultant. I couldn't imagine he hadn't learned something from working on Perry Mason. I paused and then added, "And, remember, the guards should be arriving soon. Be on the look-out for Dick Lancaster. And, hopefully, Hal will be here before too long."

He nodded, smiled at me, and then leaned in a bit and whispered, "I love seeing you like this, Boss."

I looked around. The fog was as thick as ever and there was no one else around who was visible, at least. Getting down on my haunches, I motioned him in closer. He didn't need any further persuasion to lean forward and give me a satisfying kiss.

. . .

There was a brisk knock on the trailer door.

Inez and I had everything set up and were ready. She was sitting on a folding chair we'd moved to a spot next to the door. She would answer each time and welcome the person in.

I had positioned another folding chair off to the right side of the cushioned bench that was built in under the picture window, whose curtains were drawn closed. The bench was across from the two spots set up for hair and make-up. From where I sat, I would be able to see Inez. The bathroom was just behind me.

Inez looked at me and I nodded. She stood and pushed open the door.

"Mr. Jones said you wanted to see me first, Mr. Williams." Miss Stanwyck walked in, ignoring Inez (which was exactly what I wanted to happen), and crossed to where I was standing.

She was still wearing the same outfit from earlier. Carter had asked her if she wanted to change, but she'd said she would wait until I'd questioned her. The blood, of course, had dried. I noticed she'd washed her hands and got most of the blood off of them, but not all of it. She had put her hat on and had it pulled down over her hair. She did look better that way. Or, at least, I thought she did.

I nodded, gave her a brief smile, and motioned to the bench. "Have a seat, Miss Stanwyck."

She did just that. The bench was wide enough to hold two people. She sat in the spot furthest away from me.

I sat and leaned forward a little. "As I explained earlier, Sheriff Ellis in Santa Rosa has deputized me to hold and question everyone until his men can get here." I sat back. "I wanted to see you first because I'm pretty sure you may know more about what's happened here than anyone else.
