Chapter VI

Two hours later, Laura sat at her desk and stared down at the marked up sheaf of papers in front of her. They were decked out in red ink signifying the changes Sir wanted made to the documents. Apparently, he was in the midst of negotiating a deal for the purchase and sale of a corporation. It was tedious, mind-numbing work and, with everything that had happened to her over the past few days, she was having a hard time concentrating. On top of that, this was not the type of work she was accustomed to doing. In her prior firm, she worked for a litigation attorney – not a corporate one. Plus, her prior firm had been a large one, so the legal assistants didn’t create or edit large documents; instead, those were sent to the word processing department. As a result, she had to figure out the special word processing software and formatting norms used by those who normally worked on these types of documents.

The problem was that Sir had given her a deadline. She had until 4:00p.m. to complete the revisions and she needed to do a good job. She sighed.

A knock sounded on the doorjamb to her area. She looked up to see Roslyn smiling at her.

Roslyn lifted a lunch bag. “Hey there, I was about to take a lunch break and wondered whether you’d like to join me.”

Laura smiled. “I’d love that.” She grabbed her lunch bag from the lower desk drawer got up and followed Roslyn to a small conference room. It was empty except for the two of them. It pleased Laura that they’d be able to talk freely.

Roslyn closed the door and slid into a seat at the conference table. She gestured Laura into the seat across from her. “I like to come in here and have lunch when it’s not taken. That way, I can have a little privacy.”

Laura smiled at her. “I’m the same way. Thank you so much for allowing me to share your little domain.”

Roslyn laughed. “It’s my pleasure. The price of admission though, is that you can’t make any comment about the fact that I eat the same lunch every day.”

Laura lifted her eyebrows. “Really? The same lunch every day? Why?”

“Well, I told you before that, when I came here. I was at least fifty pounds overweight, right?”

Laura nodded. “Right.”

“Well, my master put me on a strict diet. One where I don’t have to think about what I’m eating. It’s designed for me to get all the nutrients I need,” Roslyn said.

“Okay. I can see the benefits of that. But couldn’t you or he add a little bit of variety here and there? Maybe substitute shrimp for chicken or tuna for salmon or something?” Laura asked.

Roslyn shrugged. “Why mess with what works? I took the weight off and kept it off for three years and I feel fantastic. He does change it up a little sometimes. I get a free day every week when I can eat whatever I want.
