Mission Shark

Zeppelin Games - 1991

Mission Shark was originally a release from Poland called Misja and is also simply known as Mission. Originally published as part of a compilation by LK Avalon it was later re-released on budget by Atari 8-bit stalwarts Zeppelin. This is an interesting title that mixes elements from a few other games and can best be described as an arcade adventure. At first it looks much like Konami’s classic Green Beret but rather than just being a horizontally scrolling run and gun you are required to go up and down ladders and jump across platforms as you explore the vast military base trying to find four top secret canisters. As well as the enemy soldiers patrolling the base, you must also take down force fields, take out the gun turrets and avoid the mines. You are equipped with both a machine gun and some grenades to aid you on your mission but both of these are limited so you must look out for replenishments. You have limited health, which can also be topped up, and there is handy mini-map in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Mission looks fantastic, the sprites are nicely animated and the choice of colour works really well. Even better though is the superb music that plays throughout the game, this is the POKEY chip at its very best. If you have an Atari XL or XE then Mission Shark is one game that you should definitely seek out, you won’t be disappointed.
