THE FIVE ARRESTED protestors – one woman and four men - were detained in the police chowki that night and released the next morning. It was an intimidation tactic the police had successfully used before, but it backfired this time. The anti-dam activists gathered outside Santosh’s house that afternoon and burned his effigy shouting insulting, threatening slogans.

“We will burn you like this effigy.”

“You dishonored our woman comrade by keeping her in a cell without giving her a chance to defend herself.”

Santosh’s secretary called Veera who said he was ill and sent a dozen police to guard the MLA’s house. Santosh took refuge in the storeroom at the back of his house until the protestors left late in the evening.

A dangerous line had been crossed.
