The Forbidden Fruit

Katherine D’Souza

38 City Apartments, New York

Sid and Anjali are getting a divorce.

Riya is writing a story about that night.

There is a blackmailer who is a skilled hacker too.

And Natasha claims that Sania’s ghost is wandering in her bedroom.

Katherine didn’t have the nerves of steel to survive all this. A single cigarette had turned into a pack, throwing out of the window her resolve to not smoke. She took one final crisp drag on the tailing end of the stick in her hand and relinquished it under her black stiletto.

Katherine drove back home, determined to do what she could do best, other than second-guessing herself.

She hacked.

Her first achievement as a hacker was hacking her brother’s email, and then the rest was history. She had strictly adhered to her professional codes by not hacking any personal accounts thereafter. But today, for the second time in one day, she was browsing through Sid’s computer, scanning through his folders with a fine-tooth comb.

It felt as unnerving as going through Sid’s drawers of briefs.

She contemplated and then decided to hack Sid’s phone, too. There was nothing to raise an alarm, though. Moreover, his devices were too vulnerable to be a hacker’s device. She ran a quick check on his cloud; no other devices were connected to his account or to his credit card.

But if Sid wasn’t a hacker, why was he part of this?

Collateral damage.

And why was the hacker dragging the reunion night into it? What happened on the reunion night?

She dialled Sid’s number to get the answers.

‘Hello, KD. Terribly busy, yeah? You have no time to call! How’s Sam and my little brats?’ Sid asked. But his warmth didn’t create an ache in her unhealed wound today. It made her recoil with repulsion instead. The hacker’s allegations had tarnished her feelings for him.

She steeled herself and asked sharply, ‘SK, what happened on the reunion night?’

The reply came after a pause, ‘Which reunion night? Go slow, my bullet train.’

‘Last year’s reunion.’

‘Let’s see. Booze. Dance. Fun. Party as usual. But why are you asking me about the night you attended yourself? Are you now wondering what fun you missed, by going back home too early?’

Sid’s answer had done nothing to calm her nerves. She reframed her question, ‘Did I drink too much? Looks like I had an episode of alcohol blackout.’

‘Blimey! You mean you forgot hitting on me and calling me Sam. I had to call Matty to take you home,’ Sid said. That sounded more like her. But the picture sent by the hacker would not let her be in peace, not until she had reclaimed her memories, or until someone validated that nothing had happened between them. She tried again.

‘So, nothing happened between us?’

Please say no.

‘Why are you asking? Are you pregnant and don’t know who the father is?’ Sid chuckled. But his effervescent mischief didn’t do its magic today.

‘Sid, answer me please,’ Katherine pleaded.

‘Do you think I can let something happen between us? Although, it wasn’t an easy feat with your stunning new looks and you hardly kept your hands off me.
