Chapter Ten
Sarah watched, trembling as fear, as the deformed bear she had been working on came to life. A normal looking bear other than the fact its jaw had been elongated as though its mouth were stretched wide open. Slowly, like a child taking its first steps, the bear tottered over to where she had been preparing the teeth she had planned to push into the top of the bearâs mouth, along with the bottom too. The other bears watched on, equally fascinated as to how this new creation would take its own shape.
The bear grabbed a handful of the pre-made teeth and started pushing them into its fleshy mouth. It started inserting the teeth into the top gum, just as Sarah had planned but - when there was room for no more - it began pushing them into every nook and cranny it could find to fill. Soon the teeth were along the top row, down the sides and across the bottom - hundreds of human-type teeth leaving room enough to swallow whatever it chose to eat. Then, when the teeth were in place, its eyes changed - a heavy frown forming across its brow and sticking in place and a blackening of the eyes themselves. Sarah didnât say anything, nor did she try and move. Chained to the wall still, there was little point. She was going nowhere. Slowly the bear turned to her - its harsh stare fixed onto her.
âHow is this happening?â Sarah asked. The question wasnât directed to anyone in particular. If anything, she was asking herself. âIs this it? Have I finally gone mad?â The bear tripped its way towards her, stumbling over feet not used to supporting its weight.
âTooth - hurt?â The bear pointed towards Sarah. Its sentence structure in the infancy. It tapped one of its own teeth and pointed back towards Sarah. âTooth hurt?â it asked again. Sarah didnât know what to say. For fear of upsetting it she slowly nodded. Seeing the nod, The Smiler leaned forward - its smile somehow wider as it anticipated what was coming. âTooth - hurt.â It wasnât a question this time. It was a statement. The bear flung itself through the air and hit Sarah full on in the face, knocking her back against the wall. Sarah went to scream but her voice was muffled by the bearâs furry body pressed against her. The other bears jumped at her too, all of them grabbing a different part of her body. Some on her arms, some of her legs - each of them dragging her down to the floor until she were spread-eagled on her back with the toothache bear still on her face. Stuck, the toothache bear lifted itself from her face and sat back on her chest. It leaned forward so that its face was close to her mouth. âOpenâ¦â it told her. With four bears on her limbs, two of the other bears scurried over to Sarahâs face and forced her mouth open wide.
