Chapter Seven–Ashland

The oppressive silence of Mossy Oak was broken only by the occasional creak of the old house settling and the distant ticking of the grandfather clock. I paced the master bedroom, the same room where I had seen the apparition in the mirror.

My nerves were on edge, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Ghosts didn’t normally make me nervous, but I could feel their presence here at Mossy Oak.

Carrie Jo had been relentless in her concern about the succubus. It was all she talked about, her worry palpable and consuming. She kept insisting that we had to be on high alert, that this entity was dangerous and unpredictable.

I couldn’t help but feel like she was overreacting. We’d faced ghosts and spirits before, and this was no different. Right? I had to remind myself that this was just another paranormal case, another haunted house needing our expertise.

Yes, we usually stick to renovations and restorations, dealing with ghosts as they appear. But this case was different. Yeah, just walking around I could see where there could be some improvements but that’s not why we were here.

I glanced at the photograph of Olga Frederikson that Rachel had found, now sitting on the dresser.

The woman’s sad eyes seemed to follow me wherever I went, a constant reminder of the house’s dark history. It was unsettling, but I pushed the thought aside. There were more pressing matters to focus on.

The Brotherhood’s involvement bothered me more than I cared to admit.

Rachel seemed to trust Adam implicitly—even though she confessed she’d never met him personally. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being drawn into something bigger than I understood.

The Brotherhood would have their own agenda, and I didn’t like the idea of relying on them for help. We could handle this ourselves.

The mirror, now covered with a sheet again, stood ominously in the corner. I couldn’t help but think about the apparition I had seen earlier. She had been so real, so tangible. The memory sent a shiver down my spine, but I pushed it away. This was just another investigation, and I needed to keep a clear head.

Carrie Jo’s voice echoed in my mind, her warnings about the succubus ringing loudly. She was convinced that the entity was a threat, that it could do real harm. I wasn’t so sure. We’d faced powerful spirits before, and we had always come out on top. This situation would be no different.

Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled over me.

The house was alive with dark energy, and it was only a matter of time before we would have to confront it head-on.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what lay ahead. We would face this entity, and we would banish it from Mossy Oak for good.

I glanced at the covered mirror, unable to ignore the pull it had on me. Despite Carrie Jo’s warnings, I felt compelled to see the apparition again, to understand what she wanted. I walked over and hesitated for a moment before pulling the sheet off the mirror.
