Chapter 10

Dante

It was the hunger pangs that finally drove Dante from his room. That and the enticing smells coming from the kitchen.

If he’d had proper skin in green or red or blue, or better yet, a combination of more than one like Reggie had with his gorgeous aqua coloring…

Dante shook his head. He was trying not to think of Reggie.

At any rate, if he’d properly incorporated Changed DNA, he could have put on a full-spectrum light and at least kept his energy up a bit through photosynthesis.

It was just another way that his body had let him down.

Now he was absolutely starving, and completely out of energy bars. Which meant he’d have to brave Reggie.

He’d heard him out in the kitchen late last night and most of the morning, too. Dante had taken a short nap, but when he’d woken up, it had been to the background of clinking dishes and delectable aromas. Since this afternoon, there’d been music playing, too.

He opened his bedroom door. There was a familiar Christmas tune on, and Reggie was singing along in Spanish. Did everything he did have to be so playful and sexy? How was he so cheerful and relaxed all the damn time?

He was probably dancing around the kitchen, making yet another feast while his hips swayed to the beat.

Dante turned the corner, and he’d been right about the dancing. What he hadn’t expected was to see Reggie up on a ladder, hanging plastic garlands along the walls.

It filled him with a bittersweet warmth. A nostalgia for a warm, cozy holiday that he’d never had.

Dante looked away. Maybe he could sneak into the kitchen, grab something, and dart away while Reggie was distracted.

“Dante!” Reggie’s deep voice boomed across the space.

Dammit.

Dante pasted on a smile and looked up.

Reggie was grinning at him, his face flushed and his eyes shining.

God, he was gorgeous.

Dante was suddenly acutely aware that he was wearing his oldest, coziest pajamas, the ones with the holes along the bottom of the shirt. His hair was a mess and his face was scruffy. He’d forgotten the cuffs to cover his hands again, too.

And Reggie was wearing a fucking Santa hat.

Dante swallowed. “I just… um, came to get something to eat. I didn’t know you were busy.”

“There’s plenty. Let me get you something.” Reggie jumped down from the ladder, making Dante’s stomach swoop.

“You don’t have to—”

“It’s a special family recipe.”

Dante tensed, ready to retreat. He watched Reggie’s face fall.

Shit. “Okay,” he finally agreed, because he wasn’t strong enough to resist the lure of homemade food and Reggie’s company. He made his way over to the table. Why did this have to be so weird?

Were there instructions somewhere on what to say to the guy who’d just shared your heat and fulfilled your every fantasy, and was now serving up his special family recipes? What were you supposed to say?

“You’re going to love this,” Reggie told him, like nothing had even happened two days ago. “It’s been simmering all day. We make it every Christmas.
