Casey hung up the phone, not bothering to go down to her desk, but making the call to the painters in the hallway. She’d paced up and down as she double-checked that April 4th was really the first available date they had, and yes, it really was.

Casey took a deep breath before she knocked on Leah’s door, waiting for her to answer before pushing it open.

“What day?” Leah asked without barely looking away from her computer.

“There’s a problem.”

That got Leah’s attention. “Yes?”

“Since the company you like to work with is very good at their job, they’re booked out until April.”

“What?”

Casey nodded. “I can find somebody else, but it’ll probably be a month or more with such short notice.”

“I just want to get this done. I thought when I approved the designs, it wouldn’t be more than two or three weeks before it was finished. I should have thought to check on the situation sooner, but things got busy.”

“There is another option.”

“And that is?”

Casey slid her hand in her pocket. “I painted my apartment last month. It’s not that hard. If I get the same good-quality paint that you’ve already picked out, and maybe some decent rollers, it’ll probably be even easier.”

“Are you being serious?”

“Yes?” Casey wet her lips. She thought it was a great idea. “I mean, if you still want the professionals, it’ll be April before you have the office looking like you want it. If I do the painting…” She shrugged. “It’ll probably take me the next two days. The furniture can arrive next week, and you’ll have a new office for the new year.”

“You’re not working on Christmas,” Leah said with a laugh. “I’m not that cruel. But are you sure that you want to do that? I’m not doubting your painting skills.”

“Yeah. I actually enjoyed doing it. Grace was away, so it was just me, and yeah, it was hard work, but it was worth it. And as big of an office as this is, it’s not as bad as doing four separate rooms and a hallway.”

“Okay. Go for it.”

“I’ll get the paint today.”

“Good.” Leah folded her arms across her chest. “But no painting tomorrow.”

Casey agreed, her attention already back on her phone, searching for the brand of paint she needed to go find.
