and undress to old ghazals

we’ll giggle through port rum

and French kiss our lips

numb

and play our broken hearts

and pretend to grow apart

because who are we kidding?

We only wanted distraction

we were never in love, jaan.

Our demons were just

terrific

dance partners.

Two

Every beautiful thing in the world

came in twos, you said.

A pair of wings.

A pair of earrings.

Lovers.

The first date we went on

we got tangled up in each other

like a pair of shoelaces

never undone.

We were two of everything.

Your hand in my hand.

Your leg over my leg.

Your lips on my lips.

Always in twos.

The second time we went out,

your lips came in pairs too-

sometimes, with kisses.

And sometimes, with abuses.

And every time after that

your fists, they were two

my eyes, were seeing double.

Purple, two.

Your palms, two

Slapping against my cheeks,

two two two

until they were twice the colour they should have been.

It’s almost a year since I let you go.

You’d be surprised how far two legs can run.

Or how well a pair of lungs can breathe out toxic things.

And I know you don’t understand why I would rather be alone

than be with you, but tonight as I sat in my verandah

staring at my old bruises, I wondered.

Maybe two is not for us, my love.

Maybe two isn’t always as beautiful as you think.

After all,

we should’ve known.

Even handcuffs come in pairs.
