A few days later, while Joey was talking to Jean about the movie they were all going to watch that night, Teddy saw his father sitting alone in his study, with the lights off, his face in his hands.

“What’s wrong, Papa?” Teddy asked.

Joe Sr. looked up, and for a minute, Teddy thought his father didn’t recognize who he was. Then he said, “Come in, Teddy. We haven’t talked in a while, son.”

Teddy entered his father’s study, sat down on a side chair, put his elbows on the edge of the desk, and rested his chin in his hands. “I always love talking to you, Papa,” he said. “You always tell me the most interesting things.”

“Well, here’s something new,” his father said. “I just talked to Joe on a transatlantic call, Teddy, and he told me he’s joining a new aerial combat unit in England that will be flying missions over Germany.”

“Does he know how to use a parachute?” Teddy asked anxiously.

His father gave him a strange look. “Why would you ask such a question, son?” he said.

Teddy started to tell him all about how he and Ralph had jumped off the garage of a nearby compound when they were pretending that their airplane had been shot down by the Nazis, but instead, he said, “I just want him to be safe.”

“So do I,” Joe Sr. said. He looked away, adding, “Why did Jack and that Japanese destroyer have to collide? Why did this have to happen now?”

Teddy didn’t have to ask why his father was saying that. He knew. Whenever something happened to his brother Jack that made headlines around the world, Joe Jr. felt pressured to do something that would make even bigger headlines.
