Interactive Notebooks

Interactive notebooks are useful to teach students how to take notes, record, collect, and organize information in traditional formats from a teacher, text, or other resources. They also help students process information, reflect on their learning, find and summarize additional resources, develop connections and relationships, conduct analyses, synthesize data in interesting ways, solve challenges creatively, and develop persuasive arguments. In other words, students are able to organize a notebook so that, on the one hand, they collect and organize information and ideas, and, on the other hand, they analyze, synthesize, and apply information and ideas in meaningful ways.

While interactive notebooks (chapter 2) are a valuable teaching tool, they also allow a teacher to assess how much students know and understand. The notebooks can help a teacher evaluate a student’s understanding of key concepts, note-taking ability, information organization, pattern finding, writing coherence, creative thinking, and so on, by reviewing the completed work in an interactive notebook. Teachers can periodically collect the notebooks to review work and provide feedback both on how to improve students’ notebook use and the work generated by it. Teachers might conference with students to discuss and evaluate the completed tasks in their notebooks. Collecting the interactive notebooks at the end of a unit or term works as part of a summative assessment.
