“GOOD MORNING,” SHE addressed the room, taking note of the serious nature by which everyone was staring at her.

“Thank you for joining us for our wedding breakfast. My sincerest apologies for the disruption earlier this morning,” she began, her quiet voice ringing out over the silent room, “I fear I gave my dearest husband and our staff quite a fright when I awoke suddenly with a terrible dream and sought to escape it by running through the halls.”

She peeked out at the faces that were staring back at her with interest and gave a rueful laugh.

“You may rest assured that all is well and that I am much recovered,” she placed her hand on Darcy’s elbow and looked up at him, her eyes shining and bright, “My husband has requested, for his own peace of mind and my own, that perhaps I read less of the Classics before I retire so as I do not dream of things such as satyrs and cyclops that cause me such potent distress.”

A few titters of laughter sounded through the room as Lizzy quirked a smile at her guests.

“I will take his wise counsel and stick to poetry or scripture in the future!”

The guests smiled at her indulgently and began to turn their attention back to their food and drink, merrily feasting and discussing the events of the day.

“Very good, m’dear. You’ve saved yourself at least one punishment with that performance.” Darcy muttered under his breath, his voice soft but alarming, as he walked with her to their seats at the main table.

Lizzy schooled her features and nodded pleasantly, “They think me addled and a bluestocking, is that so much better?” she forced out through her teeth.

Darcy stopped, helping her into her seat and signaling to the waiting server to bring her a plate.

“Better that than the notion that my wife somehow fears me not one full day into our marriage.”

The fierceness of his declaration made Lizzy stiffen and she nodded in acknowledgement. He pressed a soft kiss to her hand and left her to make conversation with those seated around her.

Lizzy went through the motions but it was hard to remain coherent when she could feel his calculating eyes studying her from across the table. Altogether too soon, breakfast was over and she was standing, arm in arm, with Darcy and waving good bye to their houseguests. An ominous silence settling over the house with even the servants making themselves scarce.

She turned to Darcy, her eyes pleading, “Pray do not keep me in suspense a moment longer, sir. Let me out of my misery and tell me that which you plan to punish me with for my transgressions.”

“Perhaps the unknown, my dear wife, is part of the punishment.” he dropped her hand abruptly and pivoted on his heel, striding towards his library and leaving her forlorn and alone in the foyer.
