Night had fallen, and the moon was high. River stared out the window of Kardia’s home. She had sensed in a change in Kardia since she had spoken with her grandfather.

Kardia had caught River up on the phone call, but River sensed it bothered her. River couldn’t fathom growing up in a household that didn’t include love. Her heart ached for Kardia. River vowed in that moment that once this was all over, their home would be filled with love and happiness. Her mate would never feel unloved again.

She glanced over her shoulder and took in Kardia sitting on the couch. Her feet were pulled underneath her as she stared off into nothing.

She hadn’t really said much outside of sharing the discussion with her grandfather.

River blew out a deep breath and turned around. She leaned back against the windowsill and gazed at her mate.

“The ward is a strong one,” River said, breaking the silence. Kira had left long ago after they had completed the spell to construct the magical fence that surrounded the property. “It should hold against anyone who tries to come here to do you harm.”

Kardia nodded.

River flew across the room and sat next to Kardia. She pulled her into her arms, hugging her hard. Kardia held on to her tightly. River lost track of how long they sat like that. If this was what her mate needed, then she would stay for as long as Kardia needed her.

The energy that poured off Kardia was that of sadness, and it practically broke her heart.

“Are you hungry?” River asked. The day had been a long one, and they hadn’t eaten since they’d left the diner.

“Not really,” Kardia mumbled.

“You need to eat something. Let me see what you have in the kitchen and I’ll make us some dinner.” River sat back away from Kardia. She took her mate’s face in her hands and plopped a big kiss on Kardia’s lips. “Don’t try to stop me. I’m here for you. You are mine and I’m yours, and I’m going to take care of you.”

Kardia exhaled, a small smile appearing on her lips. Her facial features softened, and she visibly relaxed.

“Okay, River. Whatever you want to do.”

River stood and went in the kitchen on a mission. She was determined to make them something good to eat. Her mate needed to keep her strength up.

Opening the fridge, she rummaged through it, pulling a few things out. She set her findings on the counter then moved over to the cabinets.

“What are you making?” Kardia leaned against the doorframe. Her amber eyes tracked River’s every movement.

“Well, since you don’t have any meat that isn’t frozen, breakfast it is. I’ll make us some pancakes.”

“But I don’t have pancake mix.” Kardia frowned.

“Oh, posh! We don’t do store-bought mix when we can make it from scratch ourselves.” River spun around with a smile on her lips. She held up the dry ingredients she’d need as if they were a prize.

“I’m impressed.” Kardia sauntered into the kitchen and hopped up on the counter near the supplies.
