Patric’s key question: How do you keep your tech tools sharp?

I think there are really three essential parts to this: networking, alertness and learning. I am relying heavily on my professional network to filter and surface new ideas, tools, techniques, etc. At the same time, I pick up names or terms I am not familiar with. If I pick something up, I spend a moment putting it in context and understanding how it could be used. At this stage, my learning is superficial and I am only optimising for breadth, not depth, but it helps me build up a catalogue of resources that I can come back to at a later stage when I am confronted with a specific problem. At that stage, I spend more time to learn in depth. This, in combination with having a specific problem to solve, allows me to learn quickly and effectively.

Patric’s background story

Patric has worked in commercial software for over 10 years, having spent time before that in academia. Although he enjoys coding, he finds himself always looking to improve teams and processes, which naturally led him into the Tech Lead role. He sees the most difficult challenge in software as the social rather than the technical aspects.
