Mr. Burrows had what he needed by the following Tuesday evening. Sebastian, the lead engineer on The Storyteller tree project, brought it to Mr. Burrows at the end of the day.

“This should do it, Mr. Burrows,” Sebastian said as he crouched next to the end of Mr. Burrows’s credenza.

Sebastian, a tall, broad-shouldered guy with chin-length blond hair he never seemed to comb, finished connecting a couple of wires. “This control pad will give you command of all the tree’s mechanisms.”

“Good work,” Mr. Burrows said.

Sebastian’s mouth twisted. “I’m really sorry about the security snafu. We just never thought anyone would figure out the catwalk mechanism, so we didn’t think to install security cameras up there or lock down the top of the tree.” Sebastian’s shoulders rounded forward as if he expected to be disciplined for the oversight.

“Don’t worry about it,” Mr. Burrows said magnanimously. He looked away from Sebastian. The man’s red Fazbear Entertainment uniform shirt was a size too small, and it rode up his back, away from his black pants, exposing more of Sebastian than Mr. Burrows wanted to see.

Sebastian glanced up. His thick black brows were bunched. Clearly, he was expecting a dressing down.

Mr. Burrows had to admit that he was usually not known for his forgiving nature. So, he understood Sebastian’s trepidation. In this case, however, the engineers’ mistakes were fortuitous.

After he’d showered on Saturday, Mr. Burrows had gone to his office and started issuing orders. The first set of orders had confirmed what Mr. Burrows had suspected—the top of the tree had lax security. The second set of orders had put the tech team to work retasking several of the CCTV cameras. This had resulted in a fine, clear video of Murray sneaking into the tree from the top and then exiting the tree the same way a couple hours later. As he’d watched the video, Mr. Burrows had smiled.

Murray thought he was getting away with something. He was wrong. In fact, Murray was going to walk right into Mr. Burrows’s trap.

“You’re all set,” Sebastian said, rising to his feet and tugging his shirt into place.

“Thank you, Sebastian,” Mr. Burrows said.

Mr. Burrows turned to look at his new control panel. He grinned. He couldn’t wait to use it.
