8 missed calls later I arrived at the station. I was expecting a helicopter to have lifted for me with the amount of attention I had gotten, but as I stepped out of the car and put Cerberus on his lead, I couldnât hear the sound of propellors overhead. I walked across the car park. Cars stuffed in like sardines. Co-workers wandered aimlessly on their phones trying to get into contact with whoever had blocked them in when parking spaces ran too short. The joys of being a specialist, I thought. I get my own parking bay and should anyone take it, I have a furry great white shark with me to help convince them to move their cars. Not like I had ever had to do such a thing, but it was nice to fantasise every now and then. I walk to the back entrance and see Craig Johnson standing there smoking a cigarette. He saw me and a giant smile crept across his face.
âYouâre fucked.â He blew a snaking trail of blue that vanished into the clouds above. I followed the smoke and saw the gathering of grey above us. It was going to rain soon. Suddenly taking my time getting here didnât seem like such a smart idea after all.
âTell me something new,â I laugh. âHow are you?â Craig shrugged.
âI must have pissed someone off.â
âWhy is that?â
âBecause they have put me with you for the day,â he slapped his body armour. The bosses didnât like us wearing all black. But we much preferred it. Something about not being seen until youâre grabbing a hold of the guy youâre tracking made it all the more fun.
âSucks to be you then,â I joked. I hadnât worked with Craig for a few months. Since my return to work anyway. He was the best cop I knew, and the only one Cerberus ever let pet him. The others had the stitches to prove it, followed by a swift âI did tell you he wasnât friendly.â Just to prove my point, Cerberus lept up at him and Craig nestled his face into his fur.
âHowâs the boy?â Craig asked, stroking the dog.
âPain in the arse as ever!â I took one of his cigarettes from the packet he was holding. I lit it and let the taste of ash fill my mouth and the smoke fill my lungs. I leaned against the wall and let out a heavy breath. Nicotine flooded my system. Fuck cancer. I didnât care right now. The chemical helped my hangover and suppressed my nausea.
âI thought you were quitting?â Craig asked looking at the smoke.
âI thought you were getting rid of your beard?â He put his cigarette between his teeth and fluffed out the wild bush attached to his face. Thick and black like a 70âs porn stars bikini line.
âGuess weâre both full of shit then.â Cerberus moved to the wall and began sniffing before carelessly relieving himself on a âNo Smokingâ sign that had fallen onto the floor. We
