Ride and Die

Kennedy was on her way to work in LaFollette. She was working the closing shift at Tubby's Grill, home of the Cowaburgra: "The best deep-fried burger in the state or your money back!" She was 17, blonde and beautiful. She was a carhop that brought in tips at such a rate that some days she made more money than her mom did. Not that she was likely to share that bit of information with her mom. She already made Kennedy buy her own gas and pay for upkeep on her car. If her mom knew how much Kennedy took home a week, she would be asking for insurance money, too. It was a warm autumn evening on the eve of Halloween; the kind of Friday night that would boom once the football game ended. The Cougars weren't very good again this year, but that didn't stop fans from showing up every Friday night. Kennedy missed the games. She'd been a cheerleader her first three years at CCHS but as much as she enjoyed it, she enjoyed having money more, so she'd gotten a job. Tubby told her Friday nights were must work nights when the Cougars played at home. She'd agreed, and after many tears shed with the other soon to be senior cheerleaders, she'd departed the squad.

She came through downtown LaFollette going 15mph over the speed limit, having no fear of getting a ticket. She'd been pulled over a few times in her young driving career but had yet to meet an officer who even got his ticket book out once he got to the window and got a look at her. She approached the Viaduct Bridge over Big Creek in downtown LaFollette at 55 in the 40mph zone. As she crossed the bridge, her car sputtered and bucked a bit but then smoothed out and traveled fine the rest of the way to work. She made a mental note to tell her dad about the car making the noise and stalling as she grabbed her apron and dashed in the door to work. "Yer late again, Kennedy," a gruff looking man in the back barked as she rounded the end of the counter and took her spot. "Sorry Tubby, totally won't happen again," she said back to him. You could hear the smile in her voice as she said it. It placated Tubby, though, and that's what mattered.

An order came in over the intercom on her side of the drive-in lot. Six minutes later she was out with two cheeseburgers, two fries, two chocolate shakes and a water. The radio in back was counting down the final minutes of the football game. It had been closer than normal, but the home team lost again; this the final game of a three win season. Over the next three hours a steady crowd streamed into Tubby's. Some were in and out, some were hanging out. While Kennedy genuinely enjoyed her classmates, she would rather they just left to free up another spot, which meant another tip for her.
