A nurse’s experiences

There have been dozens of books written on the subject of near-death experiences, but one of the most fascinating is The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences by Dr Penny Sartori. Dr Sartori worked as a nurse in the intensive care unit of a British hospital for 17 years, and after seeing a lot of death up close, she wanted to find out what happens to us when we die.

She went on to do a PhD in near-death experiences and admits that when she started out, she was a cynic. However, after eight years of study, she’s convinced that near-death experiences are a genuine phenomenon.

Some of the cases she recounts are incredible. One of her patients, a 60-year-old man called Tom, became unconscious after surgery and was unresponsive for three hours. When he came round he told Dr Sartori he’d floated up to the top of the room and could see, among other things, Dr Sartori putting a lollipop-shaped instrument into his mouth to clean it. He was right. She says everything Tom saw when he was out cold was 100 percent accurate – she can personally verify it.

Tom told her that as well as seeing what was going on in the hospital, he went to a pink room where he saw his father and a man with long, black scruffy hair and nice eyes. He was able to talk telepathically with his father and was desperate to stay wherever he was, but the man with black hair said he had to go back. Returning to his body was a huge blow, and he later told Penny that if that was death, it was wonderful.

Not only did the incident remove any fear Tom had of dying, it had an extraordinary physical effect on him. His right hand had been frozen into a claw-like position since birth, but after his near-death experience he was able to open and flex his fingers. Incredible, huh? That’s the power of spirit for you. It looks to me like Tom received some healing during his very brief time in heaven.

Dr Sartori also writes about another patient, Fred, who lost consciousness due to a heart problem. Doctors feared he was about to die but he somehow pulled through. Dr Sartori noticed how happy he looked, and when he was able to talk again, he told her he had been visited by his mother and grandmother, who had both passed away.

He mentioned that his sister had also been there, which baffled him because she was still alive. But what Fred didn’t know was that his sister had actually died the week before. His family hadn’t told him because of his precarious health.

The case that blew her away the most was of a Moroccan woman who suffered a bad reaction to an anaesthetic and, as she was at death’s door, she found herself mentally reviewing her life and then going even further back, past her birth, to the creation of the universe.
