FIFTEEN

BACK AT HER townhouse, Angela folded her arms, an angry scowl on her face. “Tell me why you slept with Cynthia Nicosia. As if I don’t already know.”

Randy lowered his head. “Does it matter?”

“Yes, damn it. You’ve asked me to trust you, but you haven’t given me the whole story.”

“I told you the truth—I didn’t kill Cynthia.”

Her already intense voice notched up. Seething she snapped, “I’ve gone out on a long limb for you. After my visit to Nicosia, I’ll probably lose my job. I’m running around like some amateur detective, yet all I find are half-truths. You ask me to believe you, to take you into my home and hide you from the police, yet you don’t trust me enough to tell me the truth. I want you to leave this instant.” Her cheeks were scarlet as she pointed to the front door.

“I’m sorry.” Randy laced his fingers together. “I didn’t sleep with Cynthia last night, like Nicosia thinks. It’s all a misunderstanding. She was upset after her outburst at Walter Parker’s party. I tried to console her, but that’s the extent of it. Not a bit of that matters, though. I didn’t kill her.”

“Based on the circumstances, I’ll be the one who decides what’s important. I’m taking a huge risk having you here.”

“Why are you taking the risk? Why didn’t you call the cops?”

“I, I, I don’t know.” She averted her eyes and turned from him. “I believe you’re innocent. I don’t like the thought of you going to jail for a crime you didn’t commit.”

He walked up to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. “Look at me.”

Angela shook her head.

Randy stepped around and lifted her chin with his finger, gazing deep into her eyes.

She pushed him away. “Don’t. Please. I’m confused enough as it is.”

“Thank you. You’ll never know what it means to have you on my side.”

“I shouldn’t be doing this.” She assessed his grateful expression. “Damn. Damn.” She shook her head again. “For now, I’ll do what I can, but you have to promise to tell me everything.”

Randy gave her a grateful look, well aware how lucky he was she was helping him. “Thank you.”

She stared at him. “Changing the subject, I wonder if Carter Camp spoke with Mrs. Nicosia last night. He told me he was going to confront her about her outburst at Mr. Parker’s party.”

“Maybe their conversation turned violent. Perhaps he should be another murder suspect.”

“That seems unlikely.”

“Camp was pretty upset about the Desert Palm being sold. What if he lost it?”

Angela narrowed her eyes. “There’s no motive for him killing her no matter how angry he was.”

“Yeah, I suppose you’re right. Tell me about your meeting with Joe. What did he have to say?”

Angela wrapped her arms around herself and shuddered. “What a creepy man. He says he has an alibi if he needs one but that he doesn’t.”

Randy’s eyes probed hers. “He looked so shocked when he saw that Cynthia was dead. He must be telling the truth.”

“I’m not sure.
