Chapter 13

Dez

Dez hated the fact that he couldn't trust his wolf anymore. After the game last night, he still had leftover nerves, so it seemed natural to turn into a wolf and go for a run. He never expected that he would go to Scarlet's house. He stalked the house from a distance to make sure Scarlet was safe for a while longer after he allowed her to pet him.

Damn, that was stupid. This was twice now that he’d been stupid enough to run straight to Scarlet in his wolf form.

Even worse, this time, he went up to her and nuzzled her, although there was no denying that he loved it. He liked having her pet him, but that interaction left more questions too.

How did she know it was him? She clearly recognized him. Hell, he could understand what she was saying on top of that. But she wasn't a shifter. So how did it all work?

Dez knew he needed to call Colby, if only to tell the kid to stop worrying so much. They’d hung out for a week, that should have eased Colby's worries, but it didn't.

He had to talk to a shifter expert. While he'd gotten tighter with Delaney, he still trusted Paddy more. He wasn't ready to deal with a phone conversation and was afraid that the rest of the pack might hear it. He texted Paddy: Can you come over to my place today?

As he waited for Paddy's response, he decided to get the call with Colby over with. It was clear that Colby had called multiple times throughout the night. It was no surprise when Colby picked up almost immediately. "Hey, Dez. You finally called back."

"You need to stop freaking out if I don't pick up the phone." That came out harsher than he meant, but he was annoyed that Colby called Scarlet while he was running.

Colby wasn’t even fazed. "I'm not freaking out."

"Dude, you called Scarlet while I was running, to check up on me."

"Well, who the hell goes running after playing 15 minutes in a hockey game?"

Dez rolled his eyes because he didn't have an easy answer, although getting his time cut in half in the third did give him a bit of an excuse. "Somebody who expected to play a lot more. But seriously, Colby, you need to chill out."

"I'm worried about you, bro. You know that I hate it when you go off the grid. Last night was a huge night for you. I wanted to hear how it went, and you were nowhere to be found."

"But you called her after the first missed call." He hated accusing his brother, but Scarlet was already on the phone with him when Dez showed up at her house. There was hardly enough time for him to get back to his own phone after his first missed call. "Come on, Colby. What's the real deal? I thought you wanted me to leave the wilderness."

Colby let out an exasperated sigh. Dez could practically see his brother rubbing his jaw the way he always did when he got called out.
