At nine-thirty the next morning, on her way to the airport, Jessica stopped by her office. “The MacDonalds made an offer,” Marie told her as she walked through the door. “Only five thousand below your asking price, but I don’t know how much higher they can go. I think they’re pushing their ability to get a mortgage now, with the new baby and all.”

“You know,” Jessica said, thinking about Eric’s reaction to the house he had built, “I’ve made a nice profit on that house and I like that couple so much. Take their offer and offer them most of the contents for another five thousand.”

“Five thousand? You’re nuts. You spent twenty times that on the furniture.”

“I know. But they liked it and I want them to have it. I just want the right of first refusal if they sell any of the contents.”

Marie shook her head. “If you’re sure, Jessie.”

“I am.”

“Jessie,” Viv called. “Telephone.”

“I didn’t even hear it ring.” When she went to pick up the extension on Marie’s desk, Viv said, “Pick it up in your office, why don’t you.”

With a quizzical look at her friend, Jessica walked into her office and lifted the receiver. “Jessica Hanley.”

“Jessie,” a gravelly male voice said, “it’s Steve. Steve Polk.”

“Steve, how are you?” She pictured the tall, bespectacled man in his early forties with whom she’d had dinner several times the previous spring.

“I’m fine. I’ve missed our dinners together. How has New York been for you? Replenishing?”

“Very. A good way to put it. How did you know I’d be here this morning? I’m leaving at noon.”

“I asked Viv to call me. I really have missed you. It’s too bad you’re leaving. I was going to invite you to lunch today.”

He sounded so disappointed that Jessica smiled. “Listen. I was going to rent a car and drop it at O’Hare but, if you can get away, how about driving me to the airport. We can talk on the way.” A successful local contractor, he might be able to take some time off.

“Great. I’ll pick you up in fifteen minutes.”

“Meet me in front of the municipal lot next to Hertz at…” She looked at her watch. “Make it ten o’clock.”

She hung up and walked back to Viv’s desk. She leaned over and placed both palms on her friend’s blotter. “Have you and Steve been conspiring?”

Viv grinned. “Maybe just a little. I wanted you to remember that Ottawa does have a thing or two to recommend it.”

Jessica leaned over and kissed Viv’s cheek. “Thanks babe. You’re right. I need to figure out a balance to all this.”

“Oh, and by the way. Did you have anything to do with the craziness at Rob’s office last evening? The fire department responded. Then they had the cops and lord knows who else.”

Jessica winked. “Did he get into trouble?”

“Nah. The fire chief wasn’t happy about the false alarm, but he went upstairs, and then, I understand, he came back down laughing.”

Viv came around her desk and the two women hugged.
