Find and Delete Large Files
When you need to free up disk space fast, it pays to start by looking for the low-hanging fruitânamely, the largest files on your disk. Numerous utilities can scan your disk(s) and display all their filesâeven the hidden onesâby size. (Spotlight can do this too, but requires a bit of fiddlingâand you may have disabled Spotlight indexing for some of your data.) Some give you a simple list, while others offer a nifty graphical display that makes it easy to see how various files compare in size. Once youâve identified the largest files, you can delete those you donât need, or move ones you do need to a different drive.
Tip: Remember that merely moving files to your Trash doesnât free up any disk space; you must empty the Trash (Finder > Empty Trash) to recover the previously used space.
