Chapter Ten: Hiding Out

The bus took us to the far end of the city, weaving its way in and out of traffic. We got up and made our way to the back as more and more passengers got on. Neither Linda nor I spoke, and we kept our heads down on the off chance someone would recognize us.

Periodically, the driver called out stops, people got on and off, and we stayed quiet. My heart had settled down, and after roughly thirty minutes, most of the passengers had disembarked.

While the bus was in motion, I gave thanks to the tiny insect that had served as our alarm system. Maybe the ladybug was being helpful, or maybe it had simply disliked the smell. We had no way of knowing, but I was still grateful to live another day.

However, radar or not, we couldn’t go home. That was the first place Sagras would look. If I were him, I’d do the same thing. Now that my house had been made a target by the neighborhood moron—or morons, why be exclusive—going home would have been suicide. No, we had to go somewhere else.

My thoughts turned to Binder and his little group of so-called trustworthy agents. They were anything but. I had serious reservations about calling him. We could do that anytime we wanted, but Linda shook her head when I asked her about making the call and muttered her answer.

“Are you serious? I just saw someone turn into a killer beetle. We hit it with everything we had, and it kept coming at us. Mainly, you. And Binder didn’t know it was a bug until it was too late. Only the ladybug did.”

When a person was right, they were right. “All right, so where do we go?” I asked, sotto voce.

Linda chewed on her lower lip before answering. “My house won’t cut it. I’m afraid to go back there.”

“Do you think my house is any safer? It’s covered in graffiti.”

My girlfriend stopped chewing on her lip. “I don’t suppose you have any friends who could hide us for a couple of days.”

In reply, I gave her the Bert stare, like the puppet on the kid’s television show. It always looked snarky. “Like I said, think about my house and how popular I am.”

Despite our situation, Linda giggled. “Sorry, I should have known better.”

I didn’t know anyone, but... wait a minute. “Valette,” I muttered.

“Who?”

It was a loony idea, but we had no one else to turn to. “Arthur Valette. He’s got some conspiracy channel going.”

Now, it was Linda’s turn to stare at me. “You’re serious? Do you even know this guy?”

“No.”

“Have you ever called or e-mailed him?”

“No. Have you got a better idea?”

Linda’s face turned red. Her expression reminded me of a volcano ready to erupt, but her answer came out with a sense of resignation. “No.”

We got off at the next stop, and then I gave Linda the directions. Six-four-seven Cherry Lane, Seattle—that was our goal. She checked with a bus station’s map while I waited in an alley, savoring the coolness if not the smell, and then she came to get me.
