Chapter 21

Justice

I lay on my stomach peering over a ledge. Three and Six were beside me, as per One’s suggestion, since they were archers. We had carefully made our way through the outcroppings, climbing to a point we could look down on the men’s encampment without being seen. The ledge we were on was about fifty feet above the camp, giving us a tactical view of the small area below.

Within a naturally formed corral among the outcroppings sat a few tents. They were shielded from view on all sides unless one approached the main gap in the rocks. Had we not known the encampment was there, we would have passed right by them and never have known of their presence.

Two wagons sat in the center, one with a group of bound demis already sitting in it. The other wagon sat empty and was probably reserved for us. Ten heavily armored men covered in metal plate with large metal shields stood around looking bored. They were casually tending to ten horses, brushing them and talking to themselves. The horses were already saddled and looked ready to ride at a moment’s notice.

Those soldiers would have been a real problem… for anyone else that is. It’s a good thing I like conductive metals.

Two more men armed with crossbows dressed in light leather uniforms carefully watched the ingress into the little area. Another three men walked around, dressed in light clothing. They were probably the wagon drivers and the leader of the group.

Not that I cared. They were dead men, anyway. All of them.

I motioned for Three and Six to crawl backwards with me, away from the edge. “Think you two can take out those crossbowmen from here?” I whispered to them. “And then the other three roaming about?”

“Do demis have sex in the woods?” Six said with a quiet chuckle.

“Right,” I said with a quiet laugh. “Demis have sex everywhere. You two stay here and keep an eye out. I’m gonna go down there and start me some trouble. Once it starts, take them down,” I finished with a grin, before descending into shadows and hurrying back to my mates and the other two Dienw.

I gave a quick description of what was in the corral to them, as we all hid around the base of the outcroppings.

“They really wanted someone, to send heavy soldiers out,” Kufu huffed. “We rarely, if ever, see them in the field. They are difficult to kill.” Kufu stopped to rub her chin in thought. “Ten of them. I do wish to free those below, but maybe we should avoid this fight, my Dark Lupis. We will accomplish nothing if we fall this day.”

Laurana nodded in agreement along with her. “None know our plans, Dark. We can just avoid them and continue east. It would be foolish to fight a battle we cannot win.”

“You forget, my love,” I said smiling while holding up a fist with lightning arcing around it. “Metal conducts lightning. This is a godsend for me. Goddess, sent.
