A 10-sided die (or D10) usually is numbered 0 through 9 with the 0 representing a roll of 10. The reason for this is that it enables using two 10-sided dice (or 2D10) to roll a number between 1 and 100. This is done by having one die represent the 10’s place and the other die represent the 1’s place (the two dice need to be different colors so that the 10’s place roll can be distinguished from the 1’s place roll). For example, if the red die in fig ure 8.1 is rolling the 10’s place, the pictured roll would be 70. If the white die is the 10’s place, then the roll is 7. If both dice had rolled a 0, then the result would be 100.

For a tabletop game, a set of dice may be part of the final, boxed product. But the usefulness of dice is not limited to physical games—they are also often used in creating paper prototypes of video games. A paper prototype may use dice to simulate the output of a pseudorandom number generator in order to develop and playtest a game mechanic that will eventually be translated into computer code.
