SEEK AND HIDE

The doctors had insisted that I stay in the hospital until they believed that I was well and truly on the mend. When Brother Michael or I asked how long that would be, they tried to deflect the question. It seemed obvious to me that they didn’t know but that they were worried because of the severity of my injury and the loss of blood. I was pretty sure that the doctors were thinking in terms of weeks instead of days.

I knew that we didn’t have that kind of time and that we were going to have to get out. We needed to be gone from not only the hospital but the town as soon as we could. I didn’t know just how limited our time was. While I am a fast healer, something that I could say for all of ‘the people,' I am still a human physically, and there is only so quickly that the human body can recover from the kind of abuse that mine had just been put through. I was still taking in a lot of fluids through an I.V. It was true that I was getting my strength back faster than most people could, but it was still going to be some time before I could do any serious ‘lifting’.

We did know one thing now that might help us if it was needed, Protector could find us an existing pathway, and I could bring us all through that without having to create one. That didn’t take nearly as much of my ‘strength’ as creating a pathway. Personally, I hated running instead of fighting.

Speaking of Protector, I had not seen him since we had arrived at the hospital and I was a little anxious about him. There was a little communication between the two of us as we brushed our surface thoughts against each other. He was spending most of his time trying not to be seen or smelled. This meant that he spent a great deal of time in a subbasement that wasn’t visited very often and was filled mostly with generators and boilers as Brother Michael explained it. There were only a couple of ways in and out of the subbasement and no pathways, all of which combined to make Protector feel pretty confined and vulnerable.

They attacked on the fourth day.

It was immediately evident that They had no interest in taking me or Protector prisoner. Explosions rocked the entire hospital as all of the entrances were hit with some type of large projectiles. Walls and ceilings fell on all of the floors from the first hits and the outer area closest to where my room was started to crumble. Brother Michael appeared with his arms loaded with bags and tubes. He threw these onto me as he detached the bag hanging from the stand next to me and picked me up.

It was as though he had rehearsed the entire thing a hundred times and maybe he had in his mind. Brother
