Hazel knew she could tell Max just about anything and he would believe her. So why was she keeping this a secret?

For one thing, the other episodes had felt like waking dreams with blurred edges. This morning’s event had felt more vivid, more tangible. When she had found herself back in the auditorium seat—lost and found all at once—she’d been desperate to keep the details from slipping through her fingers. The few details that remained were like puzzle pieces that didn’t quite fit together to give the whole picture.

When they got home, Hazel was relieved that Dana was nowhere to be found. She didn’t think she was capable of faking normalcy. She dragged herself up the stairs, leaning into the banister, Max following close behind.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired.” Her feet were killing her—and the soles of them felt oddly slick—but she didn’t think she had the strength to pry off her boots and peel off her sweaty socks. Not yet. She collapsed onto her bed with a sigh, her jacket still zipped tight.

Max sat beside her. “I think a nap is in order,” he said, but her eyes were already closed. She wouldn’t give in to sleep right away; she was anxious to sort through these sensory remnants before they slipped away. She closed her eyes and sifted through her memory, dusting each moment off, an archeologist at a dig site only she had access to—her mind’s eye.
