Mr Sheppard

AFTER TWO NIGHTS AT KANGAROO LAKE — thankfully with no further dramas — the family headed towards Christchurch to see the next pony on Vicki’s list: Mr Sheppard. Both he and Millbrook were still Vicki’s favourites, and Amanda knew how relieved her sister was that neither pony had been sold.

As they drove over Arthur’s Pass, a mountain road crossing from the West Coast to the eastern plains, Amanda was surprised by how steep and winding the road was. In some places, their horse truck struggled to maintain its speed, and a long line of traffic built up behind them. As they crossed over a particularly narrow bridge, she felt sick as she looked over the edge at a mighty waterfall thundering into the river far below. But soon the mountain pass was behind them and the green carpet of the Canterbury Plains unfurled before them, stretching as far as the eye could see.
