Introduction to “The Ring of Set”

By Richard L. Tierney

Editorial intrusion. I’ve tried to avoid my favourite word (I) since the first of these introductions. It's impossible. Heck with it.

I didn't ask Tierney to contribute to this anthology, because I wasn't aware I'd read anything by Richard Tierney. Odd; I had continued the exploits of the REH creation Cormac mac Art for this publisher, in Sword of The Gael. Cormac's only appearance had been in the four stories composing Tigers of the Sea, published in cloth by Donald M. Grant in 1974 and in paper by Zebra Books a year later. Preparing for “my “ Cormac, I'd read Tigers four-point-three times. And loved the epic poem.

Dick Tierney edited that book and finished a couple of the stories as well. He wrote the poem. Now I know. But when his agent sent The Ring of Set, I was a bit put off “Trying to push his…clients…off on m…wow, this is GOOD!”

To Tierney and his agent I’ve said so, and too that Tierney is a serious, more-than-competent practitioner of whose works we should get to see more, and that if he was born in 1936 or just after, REH must have been right about reincarnation.

You’re gathering that I really like this story by a man I’ve never met. You're right. It’s told properly.
