“IF SHE DOESN’T STOP!” he had raged. I know that look, thought Maggie, as she swooped Phoebe up and ran into the barn, clutching her daughter tightly to her chest. I can bar the door. I can keep him out. She ran faster. Yet with each step she took, he took two.

He grabbed her sweater and pulled her back. She slipped from the sweater, rushed through the door, and slammed it shut. Not fast enough, though. He pushed it open before she had the chance to bolt it. With one shove, she fell to the hard, gravel ground, slicing her arm on an old rusty pitchfork that happened to lay there. Phoebe sobbed. “Run, Phoebe. Run!” Phoebe obeyed. With a bewildered look on his face, Matt turned to watch Phoebe tuck herself into the far corner of the barn, shielding her face from what was happening all around her. From the ground, Maggie grabbed hold of an old rusty shovel. She stood. Whack. And Matt went down. Hard. He did not come back up.

Quickly, Maggie ran to Phoebe, scooped her up, and fled from the barn. Outside, she stopped. Leaving her home frightened her—but what choice did she have? Behind her, an unconscious Matt was bleeding on the barn’s hard gravel floor. A terrified Phoebe was in her arms. And blood, thick red blood was on her shirt. Maggie entered the house and grabbed her coat, her bag, Phoebe’s little bag of books, and a change of clothes for Phoebe. And they were gone.

Looking back, Maggie realized how simple it all seemed now, after the fact. You make a decision. You take an action. And just like that, just like that switch on a train track, the trajectory of your life changes forever.
