Khadijah

The two Tysons may have been blessed with the brilliant legal minds in the family and could scrutinize details with accuracy even in their sleep, but I had street smarts. My sharp eyes didn’t miss much, and my hearing game was always on point. And, honey chile, I could read people, especially men. Their eyes, facial expressions, and mannerisms spoke louder to me than to the average person. That’s why as soon as my daddy’s cell phone vibrated in the middle of brunch, I studied him closely before I cast my vision on Lorna. Her face cracked like shattered glass behind all of that Lancôme makeup and her most recent Botox injections.

I thought she was going to stroke out when Daddy grabbed the phone from the table, checked the ID screen, and rushed out of the dining room. His rude ass didn’t even properly excuse himself from the table. But I did, though, a few minutes later after I faked a coughing fit. I headed in the direction of the bathroom before I made a clever detour in the direction of my daddy’s voice coming from his home office. I tiptoed to the door, and luckily for me, it wasn’t completely closed.

“I can’t wait to see you either,” Daddy whispered sexily as I listened through the small crack in the door. “I’ll be there as soon as we finish eating and I hang out with my kids for a while.” He sighed, seemingly in frustration. “Bailey is the only reason why I’m still in this miserable marriage. I love my daughter, and I don’t want to make the same mistake of leaving her like I did Tyson Junior and Khadijah. I’ll never forgive myself for abandoning them or their mother for Lorna’s needy ass.”

Daddy kept talking, but I couldn’t hear his words over the pounding inside my head. My heart was beating a million times per second. Karma was a bitch. Pops was creeping on Lorna. I didn’t know why I was so surprised. Creepers always got crept on. Life was just one big boomerang. Lorna had stolen my daddy from my mama, wrecking our home, and now, some other white woman was about to do the same thing to her sleazy ass.

“Yeah, I bought it a size too small on purpose. I like you in tight lingerie. When I see that form-fitting, red lace squeezing all that junk in your trunk, it turns Big Daddy on, Kwanza.”

Kwanza? I almost choked on my saliva. I took off running down the hall toward the bathroom. I needed to go in there for real this time before I passed out in the middle of the floor. Not only was my daddy cheating on his wife, but he was also laying that pipe on a sista. I couldn’t wait to tell Tyson. He was going to bug all the way out. I heard footsteps coming in my direction seconds before I dipped inside the bathroom and closed the door. My breathing was labored, and my palms were moist with sweat.
