NICOLE
Nicole stared at the dark ceiling. It was too early to get out of bed, but sleep was eluding her. How was she supposed to get a nightâs sleep knowing that someone was creeping around her yard at night?
Thank god she was dating a mechanic. The price of new tires for all of their cars would have had her fainting right there in her driveway.
âForget this,â she grumbled.
Kicking off the blankets, Nicole dragged herself out of bed. If she wasnât going back to sleep, she may as well start her morning ritual of drowning her worries in buckets of coffee.
At least she didnât have to feign energy all day at work. The weekend had arrived right in time for her anxious spiral.
She yawned and stumbled her way down the stairs. A random toolbox rested on the bottom step, nearly tripping her as she continued her sleepy quest for caffeine.
Shoving it to the side, Nicole shook her head. The men taking over her house might have abs for days and dote on her like lovesick teens but they were also absentminded slobs.
She flipped on the kitchen light. For the first time all week it was blessedly silent in the houseâno werewolves grumbling about condescending cougars, no vampires arguing about court documents and spitting nonsensical lawyer jargon at each other, and no elves complaining that there was leftover meatballs touching his eggplant. Just divine silence.
Setting the coffee maker, Nicole opened the cabinet and the air deflated from her calm bubble. A frown crinkled her brow. Where the fuck was her pickle mug?
Better question, which monster had a death wish today?
âIâm buying them all paper cups from now on,â she growled.
No sleep? No lucky mug? Her weekend was growing more ominous by the second.
Nicole settled for another, less lucky mug and snagged a banana from the fruit bowl while she waited for the coffee maker. She could still turn her morning around. Mind over matter, and all that jazz.
Wasnât Miri always saying she needed to be more positive? Eyeing Drakeâs tools scattered on the kitchen table, she had to clench her teeth.
âPositive,â she hissed through her tight jaw. âI am being positive.â
She poured herself a cup of coffee and sighed as the first test sip passed her lips. Why wasnât it as good as when Drake made it? Itâs not like she made it any differently than he did. The grumpy cat shifter was ruining her for any other coffee.
It had to be the lucky cup. Drake always made sure he gave her her coffee in the dill pickle mug. It was lucky coffeeâit was the only plausible explanation.
Grumbling under her breath, Nicole peeled her banana. She jammed a chunk of it in her mouth and freed the rest of the peel to go in the trashcan. Her hand paused over the trash. Eye twitching, she stared at the overflowing garbage.
Her mug slammed down on the counter. Coffee splashed her hand, but Nicole didnât spare it a glance. She was too busy planning five murders.
