Chapter 11

“Okay, everyone, start thinking about your party partners!” Tabbi grins and holds up her drink.

Everyone whoops and claps, and totally understands what she said. Draken and I stand there, looking around trying to figure it out. The music picks up the beat. Husbands lead their wives to the center of the room dancing. They look ridiculous.

Draken grins and shrugs as he pulls me to the middle of the floor. Soon, everyone is dancing except for Beth. She walks around taking photos with her phone. We move to the beat. Suddenly, JC yells.

“Switch!”

Oh no! A hand grabs me, tall, portly, reddish beard and a brilliant smile.

“Steve Lakes. So nice to meet you, Mya,” he says.

“Um, yeah,” I say and giggle.

We twirl around, keeping with the beat. Then the song turns slow. I try to pull free, but he holds me.

“No, we slow dance. This is called ice breaker time.” He chuckles.

“Oh, okay,” I say shyly. I have trouble looking in his eyes. He’s nice though.

“You’re very new to this, I can tell,” he says.

“Really?” I’m trembling while we sway.

“It’s okay. I won’t bite. Unless you want me to,” he says and winks at me.

I burst out giggling. “Okay, I got it.”

“Yeah, relax, sweetie. No one will force you to do anything you don’t want to do. We’re all very laid back here, very cool about it.”

“Which one is your wife?” I ask.

“Janie. She’s dancing with your husband.”

Uh-oh, we’re tagged. I nod. She’s taller than me, darker skinned, big boned. She matches her husband very well. At least, I know the one thing Draken loves about me is my slight, petite frame. It’ll be okay. Suddenly, I feel good about it.

The music stops.

"Switch!" JC yells.

I gulp as the mayor takes me into his arms. Another slow song. I can't look the man in the eye. He's so well known in our community, out shaking hands, his face in the local paper every week. Tom Johnson, such a common name, but well known.

His wife, Lucy, is dancing with JC. Draken is dancing with some other petite blonde.

"So, Mya, what do you think?"

"About?" My brow lifts as I lean forward.

"This," he says and grins.

"Um, the jury is still out?" I giggle nervously.

"Ah, you'll be fine. Lucy and I were nervous our first time too."

My head tilts. Okay, time for me to inquire. "You don't fear her falling in love with someone else?"

"No more than I fear myself falling in love with someone else." He laughs.

"You know, I have to wonder now, when I see couples do a switch. You know, divorce and marry the ex-partner of their ex. You see it a lot."

"True. And I suspect this may be the case. He chuckles.

"How often do you meet here? Not you personally, but the club," I ask.

He nods. "A couple of times a month. We generally try to meet when most of us are available. We're a busy lot though. Sometimes we may only meet once a month.
