Chapter Ten

“Hey.” Riley grinned when he pushed through the bakery’s kitchen, but his morning greeting wasn’t returned by Zac. Instead he slapped cake mix into a tray with his shoulders up defensively.

“Look, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you I knew Aaron.”

Zac dropped the spoon and braced himself on the counter. “He told me everything.”

Riley exhaled slowly, then took a step into the kitchen.

“He did?”

Zac turned to him, his eyes were red raw, and his forehead was marred with deep frowns. “How could you?”

Riley’s gut clenched, and he drew his eyebrows together. “How could I what?”

Zac laughed. “All the stuff you did to him at school, it’s twisted.”

Riley gawped, then choked on air. “What I did—”

“He told me how you used to corner him, get the other kids to tease him.”

Riley shook his head. “That’s not true, he did it to me.”

Zac looked him up and down before scrunching his face tighter. “Yeah right, look at the size of you.”

“I wasn’t like this at school, I was scrawny, and shy, and didn’t stand a chance against Aaron and his thuggish friends.”

“You used to beat him up.”

The words hit him, right in the centre of Riley’s chest. He shifted on the spot, not taking a step closer but not taking one back either. He had stuck cement-like to the floor in shock.

“No, I didn’t,” Riley hissed.

“He said how you pushed him down the stairs at school, he cracked his head open and needed stitches.”

Riley rubbed at his head, still able to feel the sting. “He did that to me.”

“I don’t believe it; he’s never laid a hand on me.”

“So, it doesn’t mean he wasn’t a bully at school, he was. He was evil.”

Zac glanced away and bit his lip. His eyes swelled with moisture, and Riley took a step closer, reaching for him, but his hand was swiftly batted away.

“He said there was a girl at school he liked, and you went out of your way to break them up, to get her for yourself.”

Riley growled and gripped his hair. “He’s twisting everything, I didn’t do that to him, he did it to me!”

“Aaron’s gay, he wouldn’t try steal a girl off you—”

“He dated girls at school, lots of them.”

Zac huffed harshly. “He said you were trying to come in between me and him.”

Riley shook his head. “I haven’t, you know I haven’t.”

“You’re flirty with me, trying to tempt me to cheat.”

“Zac, stop this.”

“Am I part of your vendetta against him, another way of getting revenge on him? What was it Riley? Were his grades better? Did the teachers like him more?”

Riley banged his fist down on the counter, and the trays rattled. Zac looked at his clenched hand and swallowed uncomfortable.

“Don’t you look at me like that,” Riley whispered.

“I think you should leave,” Zac said.

Riley’s eyes started to prickle, and his face itched with heat. “Don’t—”

“Out!” Zac shouted, pointing to the door.

Riley blinked back the tears in his eyes, pressed his lips firmly together. He left the kitchen. He needed to get out of the building, needed to run and exhaust the emotions out of him.
