CHAPTER ONE

~GIOVANNI~

There are two things I utterly despise in life.

Wasting time and bad food. The latter I cannot control as I am often called to try a lot of dishes and paid handsomely for that. The former, however, is non-negotiable, irrespective of what’s at risk.

Visiting this restaurant falls under both.

There is just no way I am going to like anything they serve, and by that logic, visiting this place is a waste of my time. However, this is one of those times I am forced to turn a blind eye to that fact.

When Augusto, a long-time friend and the producer of my TV show, asked me to pay this restaurant a visit and consider purchasing it, I turned down his request, but then he insisted I do it as a favor to him. I promised him twenty minutes, and that’s exactly what this restaurant is getting.

There is already a camera crew in the restaurant, ready to film my visit. Most of the crew I’ve worked with on previous projects, so they know to give me my space.

“Mr. Canari, welcome to Palace Dining.” A man with a heavy mustache runs to me with his hand extended, but I don’t grab it. I stare down at the dough-covered hands, and he quickly withdraws them, pink spots appearing on his cheeks.

“I don’t intend to stay long.” My voice is curt as I look around the little family-owned business. Purchasing this place would be a piece of cake, but even I understand a bad investment when I see one.

“Of course,” the man says, wiping his hands on his apron, and my face wrinkles at the move. “I am Malcom, the head chef, and this is my restaurant. I run it with my wife, Terry.”

I shift my eyes to the short woman standing next to him. She doesn’t look like she’s known a moment of joy in her life with the way she glares into space.

“I’ll show you around the place and—”

“No need,” I say dismissively, my mind already made up.

Seems like I don’t need those twenty minutes after all. I think, walking past him.

I nod at the employees lined up just outside the kitchen, but not a single one of them looks in my direction. They all seem nervous with the way they avoid meeting my eyes, and I’m about to look away when I see her.

And the earth shifts on its axis.

Standing at the end of the line, watching me from under her eyelashes, is the most breathtaking thing I have ever seen, and I have been to many places all over the world.

Unlike everyone else, she doesn’t have an apron on, and her hands are behind her back, long brown hair curtaining her face. She looks away when my eyes flicker to her.

I want to walk toward her and push back her hair so that I can see the rest of her face, and I almost do just that when a voice stops me.

“Mr. Canari?”

I turn to face the head chef, glaring in his direction for distracting me.
