Chapter Seventeen

Today...

Standing in the middle of the icy road, with his back turned to the cruiser and with the dark forest stretching out on either side, John continued to stare at the little girl's ghostly figure.

“Can you talk?” he asked, convinced that he should try to get some answers from her, even though he still wasn't sure that she was really in front of him at all. “Can you hear me? Can you say something?”

The girl continued to stare back at him, just as she'd been staring for some time now, and John couldn't shake the sense that he could see death in her eyes. She was just as pale as she'd been when her body was first removed from the ice, and something about the way she was standing seemed preternaturally calm, almost as if he could sense from a distance that she wasn't breathing at all.

And then, slowly, she turned and pointed away from the road, extending one finger toward the forest.

“In there?” John said after a moment, looking into the darkness. “Is there something in there that you want me to see?”

Still pointing, the girl looked at the forest as if the answer to John's question should be obvious.

“I don't know what you want,” John continued, trying to follow her gaze. “I'm sorry, I don't know the area at all, I don't know what's out there. I don't even know which way...”

His voice trailed off as he tried to makes sense of everything that was happening. Reaching for his flashlight, he switched it on and aimed the beam into the forest, but all he saw were dark trees separate by a vast blanket of snow.

“What am I supposed to be looking at?” he asked after a few seconds, before making his way to the edge of the road in an attempt to see a little better. He peered into the forest, and then he turned and aimed the flashlight at the girl. “What -”

Before he could finish, the beam caught the girl's face; she flinched and began to turn away, and in that moment she vanished entirely in front of his eyes.

“Wait, come back!” he called out, hurrying over to the spot where she'd been standing. He looked all around, but there was no sign of her now and he realized that he never should have pointed the light at her so directly. “I'm sorry,” he continued. “I promise I won't do that again, can you just come back and tell me what's going on?”

He waited, but he was starting to realize that he might have blown his opportunity. Turning again, he looked toward the forest; he still saw only darkness and trees, but he couldn't help thinking back to the girl's outstretched arm and to the sight of her finger pointing away from the road.

“What is it?” he muttered under his breath. “What are you trying to tell me?”

***

A few minutes later, having ventured off the road and out into the forest, John waded through another bank of snow before stopping and leaning against one of the trees.
