CHAPTER 25

THE PHONE STARTLED ERIN FROM A SOUND SLEEP. AS SHE FELT FOR it in the dark, she squinted at the clock—12:12 a.m. Her immediate thought was that something happened to her mom, but when she found the phone she saw it was Duane calling.

“Hello,” she mumbled.

“Where are you?!” Duane screamed.

She looked at the phone. Swish never screamed. “In bed; asleep. Swish, what’s going on?”

“Check your place. Make sure you’re safe.”

“I’m fine,” she said.

“Humor me—check!” he demanded. “And take the phone with you in case.”

She reached over and turned on the lamp on her night table. Deciding this would go faster if she just did what he wanted, she hauled herself out of bed and roamed her apartment, flicking on lights as she went and checking to make sure the door was locked. “Okay, everything’s fine,” she said when she was finished. “Now, do you mind telling me what this is all about?”

“I’m on my way to Trinitas Hospital.”

“Why? What’s wrong?” she asked, suddenly wide awake.

“They came after JJ tonight and, from what he managed to tell me, he was beaten up pretty badly. In the course of it they told him if he didn’t tell them where Rojas was you were going to be killed.”

“Oh my God, did he tell them where David is?”

“No. He managed to fight them off. But he’s convinced they’re coming for you tonight. Until I can get to you, I’m going to call Mark and tell him to come over.”

She recoiled involuntarily. “No! Don’t involve Mark in this. Besides, I’m three blocks from police headquarters—they can be here in two minutes.”

She walked to the front window to peek out and see if there were any suspicious cars only to find the strobe of police lights bouncing off the parked cars and the tree line on the other side of Riverside Drive. She pulled her curtains back and tried to peer down the street, but the side of the building blocked her view.

“Uh, Swish.”

“Yeah.”

“Based on what I can see, I’m guessing there are several police cars farther down Riverside. I can see their lights going. I’m going to throw on some clothes and see what’s going on.”

“No! Stay put.”

“Swish, the cops are already here. Trust me, my neighbors are nosey enough that they’ll know what’s going on.”

“E, please.”

“Talk to you in a few.”

Fifteen minutes later she called him back.

“It’s a good thing you aren’t dead, because I’m going to kill you,” he said when he answered the phone. “Do you understand you were targeted tonight?”

“How’s JJ?” she asked, ignoring his comment.

“He’s pretty banged up, with a fractured right radius and probably a concussion. But feeling much better knowing that you’re alive. What did you find out?”

“According to nosey neighbor number one, around eleven thirty the police arrested two men on the corner right down from my building. Both of them had handguns. According to nosey neighbors two and three those handguns had silencers. Swish, if you’re at the hospital, what about Cori and Austin?”

“They’re okay. There’s a black-and-white sitting in front of my house.
