SUPPORTING STUDENTS WHO ARE CARE LEAVERS

Students who leave the care of local authorities or foster care are under-represented in universities. Their previous experiences of the care and education systems may mean that these students arrive at university with mental ill-health. The reasons why they were placed in care will vary across individuals and this is not a question you should ask. However, students may be happy to disclose this information to people they trust. Building effective relationships with care leavers is essential so that they develop trust. This is more easily achieved through building confidence, self-esteem and self-belief. Care leavers may not have had the opportunity to develop secure attachments with their primary carers and this can impact on their psychological development. Providing them with a named contact who they can meet regularly for support is one way of enabling attachments.
