MACK BOLAN SAT in a motel room on the outskirts of Las Vegas and studied a map of the city spread out on the bed. His chair was positioned next to it, and he sipped coffee from a foam cup while marking areas on the map with a red grease pencil. He was developing a battle plan that would effectively target those areas known to be Carillo's hot spots. The targets themselves included two casinos, three large drug houses and a couple of known gathering places for distribution gangs.

Grimaldi was smoking a cigarette at a table near the window, which was opened a crack but covered by a shade. On the table were clips for the Beretta 93-Rs and the two H&K assault weapons.

The pair rarely spoke during their individual duties, obviously content to focus upon the mission ahead. Grimaldi obviously had something he wanted to tell the Executioner, but Bolan had to squash the pilot's opportunity to do so at every turn. The Stony Man flier knew that this was something Bolan would have to do on his own. He couldn't risk anyone else from the Farm involved more than they were already.

"What's the word, Sarge?" Grimaldi finally asked as he loaded the last clip for the HK-53.

"Trouble," Bolan replied grimly. "The numbers are running down."

The pilot stubbed his cigarette in the ashtray and said with a cocksure grin, "That's no surprise. I wouldn't expect anything less out of you."

Bolan chuckled. "Yeah, I guess not."

"How many of those locales do you think are still held by Carillo's people?"

"I'd have to say most of them. The Kung Lok will try to phase themselves in quietly. Only the heavy resistance will be met with a forceful takeover."

"Makes sense."

"Yeah. The only thing that makes me suspicious is that I haven't seen much in the way of retaliation by Carillo's people."

"What do you mean?"

Bolan shook his head. "He's not fighting to hold on to what he has. Everything I know about this guy's history would suggest he'd be coming back at the Kung Lok full force."

"Or at least at you full force."

"Right. He's taking a lot of hits, but he's not retaliating."

"That does seem strange."

"It's more than strange, Jack. It's almost...tactical." Bolan fell silent, contemplating the possibilities.

"You think maybe he's waiting on Nievas's forces?"

"Yeah, I've considered that. It's possible that's exactly what he's waiting on. And if it is, that means he has a very large operation in mind."

"Well, you said before that whoever controlled the border controlled the Mexican-American drug trade."

Bolan eyed his longtime friend. "You're thinking maybe Mexicali?"

"It's possible." Grimaldi shrugged.

"Me, too. That could mean nothing short of a third world war right there in the Baja. I was concerned when Hal told me about their theory of Carillo and the FARC joining forces. Now it seems even more probable. This could go sour real quick."

"I don't know. That seems pretty intense, Sarge. What do you think?"

"I think it's going to get worse before it gets better." Grimaldi pulled the shade aside and looked out the window.
